What to Expect When You Get an MRI

At The Center, we understand that undergoing medical imaging, like an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), can feel a bit daunting. To ease your concerns and help you feel prepared, we’ve created this guide to walk you through every step of the process.

What Is an MRI?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, a safe and non-invasive procedure that uses radio waves, magnets, and a computer to produce detailed images of your bones, tissues, and organs. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRIs do not use radiation. This makes them an excellent choice for diagnosing various conditions affecting your musculoskeletal system, including ligament injuries, cartilage damage, and more.

Getting Started: The MRI Referral Process

After your initial consultation at The Center, your provider may recommend an MRI to gather more detailed information about your condition. Here’s what happens next:

Insurance Authorization Your provider will submit an MRI order to your insurance company for prior authorization. This step is necessary to ensure coverage for your imaging.

Scheduling Your Appointment Once the authorization is approved, our scheduling team will contact you to arrange your MRI appointment at one of our two convenient locations in Bend:

  • Neff Road Office
  • Medical Center Drive Clinic

Most MRI appointments are scheduled within a few days of approval.

Preparing for Your MRI

To ensure a smooth experience on the day of your MRI, follow these tips:

What to Wear Choose comfortable clothing without any metal, such as zippers, buttons, or underwire bras. Metal can interfere with the imaging process. Leave all jewelry, watches, and metal accessories at home, as these will need to be removed before your scan.

Medical Devices If you have any surgically implanted devices, such as pacemakers, metal plates, or artificial joints, inform your scheduler and MRI technologist in advance. Some devices may require specialized machines or adjustments for safe imaging.

Claustrophobia or Anxiety If you’re concerned about feeling claustrophobic during the scan, talk to your provider about the possibility of taking a mild sedative. If you choose this option, make sure to arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

What Happens on the Day of Your MRI?

When you arrive at The Center for your MRI, here’s what you can expect:

Check-In Our MRI reception team will welcome you and provide a short questionnaire to complete. This form helps us understand your medical history and ensures your safety during the scan.

Changing Rooms If needed, we provide exam shorts and gowns for your comfort. Dressing rooms are available for your privacy.

Contrast Injections (If Applicable) For some scans, your doctor may order an MRI with contrast. This involves a small injection into your vein to highlight specific tissues or areas for a more detailed image. The technologist will explain the process and ensure your comfort.

The MRI Scan

The radiology technologist will guide you into the MRI room and discuss the positioning based on the area being scanned. You may enter the machine head-first or feet-first. You’ll be provided with ear protection, such as earplugs or a headset, to block out the loud noises the scanner produces. You’ll also receive a call button or squeeze ball to alert the technologist if you need assistance during the scan. The scan itself is painless. Many patients describe it as lying still in a vibrating, noisy space. While it can feel unusual, there is no physical discomfort.

Tips for a Relaxing MRI Experience

Staying calm and relaxed can make your MRI more comfortable:

  • Focus on Breathing Deep, steady breaths can help you stay centered and reduce any tension.
  • Close Your Eyes Some patients find it helpful to keep their eyes closed throughout the scan or to cover their face with a towel provided by our staff.
  • Distract Yourself Mentally Think about a favorite memory, plan your next vacation, or count backward to pass the time.

After Your MRI

Once your scan is complete, you can return to your daily activities unless you’ve taken a sedative. In that case, be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions. The radiology team will send your MRI images and report directly to your provider at The Center. Your doctor will then review the results with you and discuss the next steps in your treatment plan.
