Let your helmet protect your brain! The brain is the command center of your body, so it is critical to protect it and keep it healthy. While there is no concussion-proof helmet, helmets do protect the skull and absorb impact, which can protect you from serious brain or head injuries.
In addition to a safe fit, be sure that helmets are well-maintained, age appropriate, worn consistently and correctly, and appropriately certified for use.
Use the two-finger rule for a safe fit
Position the helmet on your head so it sits level. The forehead should be covered within two finger widths of the eyebrows.
Make a V Near Your Ear
Position your two fingers in a V near your ear. The straps should follow the same path as your fingers. On most helmets, the straps can be pulled from the back of the helmet to lengthen or shorten the chin straps.
Fit The Buckle
Buckle up! No more than two fingers should fit under the chin strap. Roll the rubber band down toward the buckle. All straps should go through the band to avoid slipping.
Final check
- Open your mouth as wide as you can. The helmet should pull down on the head. If not, tighten the chin strap.
- Does your helmet rock back more than two fingers above the eyebrows? If so, unbuckle and shorten the front strap by moving the slider forward.
- Does your helmet rock forward into your eyes? If so, unbuckle and tighten the back strap by moving the slider toward the ear.
